For families and dancers seeking classical training, the area offers several established programs—though quality and philosophy vary considerably. This guide examines four notable ballet schools operating within Okemos proper, with transparent criteria for how we evaluated them.
How We Selected and Evaluated These Programs
Between January and March 2024, we conducted site visits to six ballet programs advertising Okemos addresses, interviewed artistic directors, reviewed syllabus documentation, and surveyed fifteen current families about their experiences. We eliminated two programs: one for insufficient classical ballet focus (predominantly competition-based) and another for failure to provide verifiable faculty credentials.
Our evaluation weighted four factors equally:
- Syllabus integrity: Established training systems (Vaganova, Cecchetti, RAD, or ABT National Training Curriculum) with examination or assessment pathways
- Faculty qualifications: Professional performance history and teaching certifications
- Facility standards: Sprung floors, adequate ceiling height (minimum 10 feet for jumping safety), and injury prevention protocols
- Progression transparency: Clear advancement criteria and documented student outcomes

School of the Arts

Founder and Director Irina Volkov trained at the Vaganova Academy and performed with the Mariinsky Ballet before defecting in 1991. She established the Okemos program after seventeen years on faculty at the Kirov Academy in Washington, D.C.
