In Colombia, Cumbia began as a courtship dance between fishermen and royalty. In Dodge City, it's become the most addictive Tuesday night habit you didn't know you needed.
At Ritmo del Sol Dance Studio in the historic Wright Building at 3rd & Wyatt Earp Boulevard, we're building something rare: a Cumbia community rooted in authentic tradition and genuine human connection. Whether you're chasing fitness goals, searching for a social outlet, or reconnecting with Latin American heritage, our classes meet you where you are—and push you further than you expected.
Class Levels: Find Your Starting Point
Absolute Beginner
No partner? No rhythm? No problem.
Start with the signature paso de cumbia and the circular "drag" that defines the style. Our beginner curriculum builds muscle memory through repetition, not complexity. By week four, you'll navigate a social dance floor with confidence.
First-timers welcome every first Tuesday of the month.
- Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:30–7:30 PM
- Saturday mornings, 10:00–11:00 AM
Intermediate: Style & Fluidity
Once the foundational steps feel automatic, we layer in complexity. You'll master vueltas (turns), develop lead-follow communication, and learn to improvise within the rhythm rather than simply execute patterns. Expect drills that challenge your timing and exercises that expand your movement vocabulary.
Prerequisite: Comfortable with basic Cumbia step and simple turns.
Advanced & Performance Track
This is where technique meets cultural depth. Master the vueltia variations of Colombia's Atlantic coast, explore regional differences between Mexican cumbia sonidera and Argentine cumbia villera, and develop the partner dynamics that separate social dancers from performers.
Quarterly student showcases at the Dodge City Arts Center. Competition coaching available by request.
Prerequisite: Instructor approval or successful completion of intermediate assessment.
Why Our Dancers Stay
"I joined for exercise and stayed for the community. Six months later, I'm performing at the Dodge City Hispanic Festival." — Elena R., advanced student
"Maria explained the history behind every step. I finally understood why my grandmother moved the way she did." — David T., intermediate student
