This May and June, Takotna City Dance Studio runs three distinct jazz workshops spanning swing roots to lyrical edge. Whether you're stepping into a studio for the first time or refining performance-level technique, here's the full lineup—and why you'll want to claim a spot before registration closes.
The 2024 Workshop Lineup
Beginner's Jazz Swing
Saturdays, May 4–25 | 10 a.m.–12 p.m.
This track draws from the swing-era roots of jazz dance, updated with theatrical styling. You'll master foundational footwork, learn partner connection mechanics, and practice moving to live and recorded swing charts. No prior experience required.
- Instructor: Maria Chen, former company dancer with City Jazz Ensemble (8 years)
- Price: $180 for four sessions; $55 drop-in
- Capacity: 16 dancers max
- Bring: Character shoes or clean sneakers; water bottle
Intermediate Jazz Fusion
Saturdays, May 4–25 | 1 p.m.–3 p.m.
For dancers with at least one year of prior training, this session layers contemporary floorwork and isolations onto traditional jazz technique. Each week builds toward a full combination that you'll perform in the final class.
- Instructor: Devon Okonkwo, resident choreographer for Takotna City Theater's spring musicals
- Price: $200 for four sessions; $60 drop-in
- Capacity: 14 dancers max
- Bring: Jazz shoes or barefoot socks; knee pads recommended
Advanced Lyrical Jazz
Sundays, June 2–23 | 2 p.m.–4:30 p.m.
A four-week intensive for experienced dancers focused on narrative pacing, dynamic control, and audience connection. You'll develop a solo or duet piece with the option to perform it at the Takotna City Summer Dance Showcase on July 14.
- Instructor: Rhea Park, MFA in Dance from Juilliard; former rehearsal director for Luna Contemporary Dance
- Price: $260 for four sessions; no drop-ins
- Capacity: 12 dancers max
- Prerequisite: Video submission or instructor approval required
Why Jazz Dance in Takotna City?
Jazz dance in Takotna City carries a distinct local history. The studio at 123 Jazz Street opened in 1987 as a rehearsal space for touring big-band acts, and the current program still pulls from that archive—students regularly practice totransferred recordings from the venue's original shellac collection. The result is training grounded in vernacular tradition rather than generic pop-jazz aerobics.
