Last spring, 16-year-old Jake Ortiz took the stage at the Louisiana Regional Youth Dance Competition and placed second in the senior lyrical division. Three years earlier, he couldn't touch his toes. His turnaround started at Rhythmic Soul Dance Academy—one of several River Ridge studios that have quietly turned this Jefferson Parish suburb into a serious training ground for lyrical dancers.
Lyrical dance, for the uninitiated, sits at the intersection of ballet's technical precision and jazz's emotional freedom. Dancers use fluid, continuous movement to interpret the lyrics and mood of a song—think less rigid pirouette, more storytelling through motion. The style has exploded in River Ridge over the past decade, driven in part by the area's proximity to New Orleans' thriving commercial dance scene and a growing pipeline of competitive regional events within driving distance.
We selected the four studios below through a combination of community nominations, enrollment data, and direct observation. Between January and March, we visited classes, interviewed instructors, and spoke with students and parents about what actually distinguishes each program. Here's what we found.
How We Chose These Studios
| Criteria | What We Looked For |
|---|---|
| Instruction quality | Credentialed faculty with professional performance or choreography experience |
| Class structure | Clear leveling, consistent schedules, and reasonable student-to-teacher ratios |
| Student outcomes | Competition results, college dance program placements, or regular performance opportunities |
| Accessibility | Transparent pricing, flexible enrollment options, and welcoming environments across age groups |
The Enchanted Dance Studio
Best for: Dancers who want small classes and individualized feedback
Location: 9408 Jefferson Highway, River Ridge
Ages: 5–adult
Class frequency: 2–4 lyrical classes per week, depending on level
Approximate cost: $165–$220/month for unlimited lyrical + ballet package
Vibe: Intimate, technique-forward, deliberately unhurried
The Enchanted Dance Studio doesn't try to be everything. Founded in 2014 by former Alvin Ailey dancer Maria Chen, the studio caps intermediate lyrical classes at 12 students and advanced sessions at 10. That constraint is by design. "If I can't see your ribcage placement," Chen told us during a February observation, "I can't help you find your breath in the movement."
Chen's lyrical curriculum requires concurrent ballet enrollment—a policy that filters out dancers seeking a casual once-a-week outlet but produces notably clean lines and controlled extensions. The studio doesn't field a competition team. Instead, students perform in two annual showcases at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center, with repertoire selected to highlight individual growth rather than group synchronization.
Practical note: Parking is ample and free. The studio has one wheelchair-accessible studio and restroom; call ahead to confirm scheduling.
Rhythmic Soul Dance Academy
Best for: Competitive dancers and pre-professional aspirants
Location: 10827 River Road, River Ridge
Ages: 8–18 (lyrical program)
Class frequency: 4–6 classes per week, plus mandatory conditioning
Approximate cost: $280–$340/month for company membership; drop-ins $22/class
Vibe: Intense, disciplined, results-driven
Rhythmic Soul is where Jake Ortiz trained—and he's not an outlier. In the past five years, the academy's senior lyrical company has placed in the top five at NYCDA Regionals, Jump Dance Convention, and 24 Seven Dance multiple times. The studio was voted Best Dance Studio in Jefferson Parish by River Ridge Weekly readers in 2022 and 2023.
Director Tasha Williams, a former backup dancer for Beyoncé's 2013 world tour, runs the lyrical program like an athletic department. Students attend mandatory strength and flexibility sessions on Saturdays. Guest choreographers rotate through quarterly; recent visitors have included Matt Steffanina associate Megan Batoon and So You Think You Can Dance alum Melinda Sullivan.
The trade-off is selectivity. New students must audition for leveled lyrical classes, and the senior company requires a 12-month commitment with strict attendance policies. "This isn't the place to try lyrical once and see if you like it," one parent told us. "But if your kid is serious, the training is undeniable."
Practical note: Rhythmic Soul requires a full-year recital costume purchase (~$85–$120 per class) and mandatory summer intensive enrollment for company members.
Harmony in Motion Dance Center
Best for: Adult beginners, late starters, and recreational dancers
Location: 1152 Oxley Street, River Ridge
