Jamar Roberts and Yue Yin bring new works to Ailey’s New York season

Jamar Roberts’s Power of Love will open Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s New York City Center season on 2 December. Yue Yin’s A Matter of Time follows on 10 December, giving the company two world premieres during its run through 3 January 2027.

Roberts’s new work turns to Luther Vandross’s songs in the year that would have marked the singer’s 75th birthday. The repertory page lists a 40-minute running time and music produced by Marcus Miller and Ron Gillyard. Its creative team includes costume designer Andre Landeros Michel, lighting designer Brandon Stirling Baker and scenic designer Carlos J. Soto.

Yin brings her FoCo Technique, which combines Chinese folk dance and contemporary movement, to A Matter of Time. The current calendar places its premiere on a bill with Ronald K. Brown’s Grace and Alvin Ailey’s Revelations on 10 December at 7:30pm.

The opening gala on 2 December starts at 6:30pm and pairs Power of Love with an excerpt from Judith Jamison’s Hymn. The season also includes the company premiere of William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated and new productions of Hymn and Ailey’s Pas de Duke.

The programmes vary by date. Audiences booking specifically for Roberts or Yin should check the full Ailey calendar; programmes and casting may change. Power of Love’s repertory page lists further performances. New York City Center is at 131 West 55th Street, and all times above are local.
