Rock Valley City's swing scene is having a moment.
In January, The Rhythm Room doubled its weekly class schedule. Swing Time Studio's Friday socials are drawing college-aged dancers in record numbers. And this August, the city will host its first-ever regional Lindy Hop exchange, bringing instructors and dancers from across the Midwest.
Whether you're stepping onto the hardwood for the first time or polishing your aerials, summer 2024 is the season to join the movement. Here's your field guide to the five studios driving Rock Valley City's swing revival—with the details you actually need to show up prepared.

The Rhythm Room: The Foundation
220 Main St., Downtown | (712) 555-0142
If you've never swung out before, start here.
The Rhythm Room's six-week "Lindy Hop Essentials" series is the most structured beginner program in town. The summer session runs Tuesdays, 7–9 p.m., from June 11 through July 16, with separate beginner and intermediate tracks taught by co-owners Marcus and Denise Chen. Marcus handles the historical context; Denise, a former competitive ballroom dancer, breaks down the mechanics with almost forensic precision.
" We've seen a huge influx of twenty-somethings this year," Denise told us. "They come in after seeing The Linda Lindas or a TikTok clip, and by week three they're hooked on the partner connection."
The summer curriculum covers six-count basics, eight-count swingouts, and a brief introduction to Charleston. No partner required—classes rotate every few minutes, which is how beginners actually improve.
Pro tip: Their August "crash course" sells out every year. Registration opens July 1.
Swing Time Studio: The Time Machine
88 Mill Road, Old Warehouse District | (712) 555-0298
Swing Time Studio doesn't just teach vintage dances—it cultivates a vintage world.
Owner Clara Henshaw, a collector of 1930s–40s dance manuals, structures her small-group classes around period-accurate styling. This summer's focus is Balboa and Jitterbug, with a special four-week series on "Hollywood-style" Lindy taught by guest instructor Danny McCarty (Los Angeles, June 22–July 13). Class size caps at eight couples, so you'll get individualized correction.
The real draw, though, is the Friday social. Henshaw enforces a dress code—"business casual or vintage-inspired"—and plays strictly pre-1955 recordings on 78rpm transfers. For dancers who want total immersion, there's nowhere else like it.
Privates run $85/hour and book two weeks out in summer.
Best for: Dancers who care as much about the aesthetic as the footwork.
The Hop Spot: The Social Hub
401 Riverside Plaza, Near the Amphitheater | (712) 555-0376
The Hop Spot's tagline is "No partner? No problem? Great."
Their Thursday night drop-in classes (7 p.m., $18) are explicitly designed for people walking in alone. Instructors Emilio and Rosa Vargas emphasize partner connection over rote patterns— you'll learn how to listen, lead, and follow rather than memorize a sequence.
"The first thing we tell people: you're not here to impress anyone," Rosa said. "You're here to have a conversation with another human being, and the music is the language."
The Vargases also run Rock Valley City's only weekly all-levels social dance, immediately following class at 8:30 p.m. The crowd skews young and diverse, with a reliably welcoming vibe for LGBTQ+ dancers and anyone nervous about gendered leading and following. (They happily teach both roles to anyone interested.)
Try this: The $140 eight-class pass pays for itself in under two months.
