Charleston's Premier Ballet Schools: A 2024 Guide for Every Skill Level

Charleston's dance scene punches above its weight. While the city may lack the institutional history of New York or San Francisco, its ballet academies have produced dancers for major companies nationwide—including American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, and Alvin Ailey. Whether you're a parent researching your child's first plié, a teenager weighing pre-professional tracks, or an adult returning to the barre after decades, Charleston offers rigorously trained faculty and distinct training philosophies. This guide examines four established institutions, with specific criteria to help you match your goals to the right environment.

How These Schools Were Evaluated

Each program was assessed on: faculty professional performance history and teaching credentials; curriculum structure and hours required at pre-professional levels; annual performance and competition opportunities; and verifiable alumni outcomes (professional contracts, conservatory placements, college dance programs). Tuition figures and class schedules were confirmed directly with each institution.

The Charleston Ballet Theatre

Founded: 1987 | Artistic Director: Jill Eathorne Bahr (former principal, Charleston Ballet; guest artist, Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet)

Faculty & Training Philosophy

Bahr built CBT on the Vaganova method, emphasizing épaulement coordination and expansive port de bras. The faculty includes two former Miami City Ballet dancers and a Broadway veteran from the original An American in Paris cast. Adult students train alongside company members in open classes—a rarity in Charleston.

Program Structure

  • Children's Division: Ages 3–7, twice weekly
  • Student Division: Ages 8–18, leveled 1A through 6; Level 5+ requires 12+ weekly hours
  • Pre-Professional: Junior and Senior Company, 20+ hours including pointe, variations, and pas de deux
  • Adult Open: Six weekly classes, drop-in permitted

Performance Track Record

CBT produces an annual Nutcracker (Charleston Gaillard Center) and full-length spring repertory—recent productions include Giselle and Romeo and Juliet. Senior Company members compete at Youth America Grand Prix regionally; 2023 marked three finalists in the classical category.

Distinctive Feature

The affiliated professional company, Charleston Ballet, offers pre-professional students daily interaction with working dancers and occasional understudy opportunities.

South Carolina Dance Theatre

Founded: 1996 | Artistic Director: Lillian Covington (former dancer, Dance Theatre of Harlem; MFA, Hollins University)

Faculty & Training Philosophy

SCDT combines Balanchine speed and clarity with contemporary training integration. Covington's DTH background infuses the curriculum with neoclassical repertory and emphasis on musicality. The contemporary faculty includes a former Batsheva Dance Company member.

Program Structure

  • Community Division: Recreational track, ages 3–adult, 1–3 hours weekly
  • Conservatory Division: Pre-professional track, ages 10–18, 15+ hours with mandatory modern and Horton technique
  • Summer Intensive: Three-week residential program with guest faculty from Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Complexions Contemporary Ballet

Performance Track Record

Annual Nutcracker (North Charleston Performing Arts Center); spring contemporary and classical showcase. Conservatory students regularly place at Regional Dance America/Southeast and have secured spots at Juilliard Summer Intensive, ABT Studio Company, and Alonzo King LINES Ballet training programs.

Distinctive Feature

SCDT's mandatory contemporary curriculum distinguishes it from Charleston's more traditionally focused academies. Alumni have transitioned successfully into modern and contemporary companies rather than exclusively ballet troupes.

Charleston Dance Institute

Founded: 2004 | Directors: Robert and Elizabeth Ivey (former dancers, San Francisco Ballet and Joffrey Ballet)

Faculty & Training Philosophy

The Iveys trained at the School of American Ballet and bring that Balanchine aesthetic—quick footwork, sharp angles, and aggressive musicality. Guest teachers have included Suki Schorer and Merrill Ashley. The school maintains close ties to SAB's summer program and annual workshop.

Program Structure

  • Primary: Ages 3–8, once or twice weekly
  • Enrichment: Ages 9–12, 4–6 hours, recreational focus
  • Intensive: Ages 11–18
