Swing Into Joy: Why Sombrillo Dance Studio Leads the 2024 Revival

The brass section kicks in. A couple locks eyes across the floor. Three counts later, she's flying through a swing-out, laughing, and landing right back in his frame—on beat, in sync, alive. This is Tuesday night at Sombrillo Dance Studio, where swing dancing is not a relic of the past. It is very much present, and it is booming.

The Return of Swing

In 2024, interest in swing has surged to its highest level in two decades. Social media clips of Lindy Hoppers going viral, retro jazz soundtracks topping streaming charts, and a post-pandemic hunger for in-person connection have all converged to send new students through studio doors nationwide. Sombrillo, based in Riverdale's Arts District, has become a hub for this revival—drawing everyone from college students to retirees who want more than a workout. They want a conversation without words.

What Swing Actually Feels Like

Swing is not about perfection. It is about pulse, play, and partnership. The dance matches the architecture of jazz itself: structured enough to hold you, loose enough to let you improvise. At Sombrillo, lessons emphasize that balance. Beginners learn to hear the eight-count. Intermediate students learn to stylize it. Advanced dancers learn to bend it without breaking it.

Our curriculum builds systematically:

Level Focus
Beginner Basic footwork, partner connection, finding the beat
Intermediate Swing-outs, turns, lead-follow dynamics, musicality
Advanced Aerials, vintage styling, competition choreography, improvisation

Instructors With Real Credentials

Our teaching team is small by design. We hire for depth, not volume.

  • Marcus Delgado, founder and lead instructor, is a three-time National Jitterbug Champion and former choreographer for the touring production of Swing!
  • Elena Voss placed in the top five at the American Lindy Hop Championships for four consecutive years and specializes in teaching follows to find their voice.
  • James Okonkwo, our beginner specialist, spent ten years running social dance programs for the YMCA before joining Sombrillo in 2022. He has a gift for calming first-timers.

Combined, they bring over 40 years of competitive and teaching experience. Classes cap at 16 students so you receive corrections, not just demonstrations.

The Studio Itself

Sombrillo occupies a converted 1920s warehouse with 3,200 square feet of sprung oak flooring—critical for protecting knees and ankles during hours of practice. The sound system is vintage-inspired: custom Altec Voice of the Theatre speakers that reproduce horn sections with warmth and punch. We also host live band nights on the last Friday of every month, featuring local seven- and eight-piece ensembles. You can practice your Charleston to a recording, but you will not understand swing until you have danced to a live drummer.

For solo practice, our motion-capture mirror system records your movements and overlays them with professional demo footage so you can compare posture, timing, and frame in real time.

A Community, Not Just Classes

Many students arrive nervous. Most leave with friends. Sombrillo runs a monthly social dance open to the public, a peer mentorship program that pairs new dancers with experienced partners, and an annual showcase where students perform choreographed routines for family and friends. Weddings have resulted from our social dances. So have genuine, lasting friendships.
