Despite its modest size, Macy City has cultivated one of the most vibrant ballroom dance communities in northeastern Nebraska. What began as informal dance gatherings at the old Grange hall in the 1980s has evolved into a surprisingly rich scene, with multiple studios serving a town of just over 4,000 residents and drawing students from as far as Sioux City, Iowa.
We spent six months visiting classes, speaking with instructors and students, and comparing offerings across the area to identify the top ballroom dance studios in Macy City. Our selections are based on instructor credentials, range of class levels, studio atmosphere, student feedback, and accessibility for beginners. None of the studios paid for placement, though we did attend complimentary trial classes for research purposes.
How We Chose These Studios
Our evaluation focused on four criteria:
- Instructor expertise: Professional competitive experience, teaching certifications, or decades of local instruction
- Class variety: Options for true beginners through advanced competitive dancers
- Community culture: Events, social dances, and student support beyond weekly lessons
- Practical accessibility: Transparent pricing, flexible schedules, and welcoming environments for all ages
Here's what we found.
Elegant Ballroom: Best for Aspiring Competitors and Social Dancers Alike
Address: 214 Main Street, Macy City, NE | Phone: (402) 555-0142 | Website: elegantballroommacy.com
Walking into Elegant Ballroom feels like entering a small-town supper club that happens to have 2,400 square feet of competition-grade sprung floor. The chandeliers are real—salvaged from the demolished Macy City Hotel in 1997—and the mirrors span both walls of the main studio.
Owners Maria and James Chen are the backbone of the operation. Both are former U.S. National Amateur Smooth finalists, and James holds certification as a DVIDA (Dance Vision International Dancers Association) examiner. They relocated to Macy City in 2015 to be closer to Maria's family and have since trained multiple students who now compete at the regional level.
What to Expect
- Beginner-friendly? Yes. Their "First Steps" program runs on a six-week cycle, with new sessions starting monthly.
- Pricing: Group classes run $18 drop-in or $85 for a six-week series. Private lessons start at $75/hour.
- Standout feature: Friday night practice parties ($15 at the door, 8–10 p.m.), where students dance with instructors and peers in a low-pressure social setting.
"I started at 62, thinking I was too old for this," says student Karen Rasmussen, now 67. "Last spring, I performed a rumba in their student showcase. I cried when I took my bow."
Elegant Ballroom excels at serving two very different crowds: serious students preparing for Pro-Am competitions and casual dancers who want a refined date-night activity. The Chens personally assess every new student's goals before placing them in the right track.
Rhythm & Grace: Best for Wellness-Focused Dancers and Contemporary Styles
Address: 89 Walnut Plaza, Macy City, NE | Phone: (402) 555-0287 | Website: rhymegracemacy.com
If Elegant Ballroom channels old-school glamour, Rhythm & Grace feels like a modern movement studio that happens to teach ballroom. Exposed brick, natural light, and a no-mirror policy in the secondary studio set a different tone. Founder Delia Okonkwo, a Nebraska native who trained in Chicago and returned home in 2019, built the studio around a simple thesis: ballroom dancing should feel as good as it looks.
Okonkwo's background in somatic movement and Pilates informs everything from her posture cues to her warm-up sequences. The studio fuses traditional ballroom with contemporary and even hip-hop influences—expect a foxtrot class that borrows from house dancing, or a samba workshop that emphasizes grounded, athletic movement over strict competitive form.
What to Expect
- Beginner-friendly? Highly. The "Movement Foundations" intro class requires no partner and no prior experience.
- Pricing: Unlimited monthly membership $110; drop-in classes $20. First class is free.
- Standout feature: "Dance for Recovery" sessions on Wednesday mornings, designed for seniors and those managing chronic pain or mobility limitations. These are donation-based and among the most popular offerings.
"I came here for physical therapy in disguise," says Tom Brennan, 58, a retired farmer. "Delia taught me to think about my breath and my feet at the same time. I move better doing chores now than I did at forty."
Rhythm & Grace was voted **"Best Date-Night Activity
