How We Evaluated These Schools
To create this guide, we examined four ballet programs serving Hillsboro's dance community. Our evaluation criteria included: curriculum methodology (Vaganova, Cecchetti, or American styles), faculty professional backgrounds, performance track records, tuition accessibility, and measurable student outcomes—professional company placements, college dance program admissions, and competition results. We also visited facilities, observed classes, and interviewed current families where possible.
Note: Specific tuition figures and class schedules change frequently. Contact schools directly for current information.
1. Hillsboro School of Ballet
The Program
Founded in 1987, Hillsboro School of Ballet operates as one of the city's longest-running classical academies. The school follows a Vaganova-based syllabus with annual examinations through age 16, emphasizing precise alignment and gradual physical development. Students progress through eight levels, with the pre-professional track requiring 12–18 hours weekly by intermediate levels.
The Faculty
Artistic Director Elena Vostrikova trained at the Perm State Choreographic College (Russia) and performed with the Ekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theatre before relocating to Oregon. Two additional faculty members hold former company positions with regional ballet organizations.
The Commitment
- Ages: 3–adult, with adult beginner classes offered mornings and evenings
- Tuition range: $85–$340 monthly depending on level and hours
- Performance requirement: All students participate in June showcase; pre-professional students perform in The Nutcracker with Portland Festival Ballet
The Outcome
Recent graduates have joined Oregon Ballet Theatre's second company, attended summer intensives at School of American Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet, and earned dance scholarships to University of Utah and Butler University.
Best For
Students seeking rigorous classical foundation with Russian methodology; families prioritizing long institutional history and established examination structure.
2. Oregon Ballet Academy
The Program
Established in 2001, Oregon Ballet Academy offers the most comprehensive pre-professional curriculum in Hillsboro. The academy trains students in both classical ballet and contemporary techniques, with separate tracks for recreational dancers and career-bound students. The professional track incorporates partnering, variations, and modern dance from age 14.
The Faculty
Founder and Director Sarah Mitchell danced with San Francisco Ballet and Boston Ballet before founding the academy. The eight-person faculty includes former dancers from Pacific Northwest Ballet, Houston Ballet, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.
The Commitment
- Ages: 4–21 (dancers may remain through college breaks)
- Tuition range: $120–$520 monthly; merit scholarships available for boys and advanced girls
- Time investment: Pre-professional track requires 15–20 hours weekly by age 13, plus rehearsals
The Outcome
Over the past five years, 60% of graduating pre-professional students have secured trainee or second company contracts with regional ballet companies (Oregon Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Colorado Ballet). Others have entered BFA programs at Juilliard, USC Kaufman, and SUNY Purchase.
Best For
Ambitious students with professional aspirations; those seeking contemporary ballet exposure alongside classical training.
3. Northwest Academy of Dance
The Program
Northwest Academy of Dance, founded in 1995, occupies a converted warehouse space in downtown Hillsboro near the MAX station. With approximately 120 students, the school maintains intentionally small class sizes (capped at 12 for technique classes). The curriculum blends Cecchetti and American ballet traditions with strong emphasis on musicality and individual artistic development.
The Faculty
Director Patricia Chen holds her Cecchetti Advanced Teaching Certificate and performed with Dance Theatre of Harlem. All faculty complete ongoing pedagogical training; no classes are taught by teenage assistants.
The Commitment
- Ages: 5–18 (adult classes discontinued in 2019)
- Tuition range: $75–$280 monthly
- Performance opportunities: Two fully produced shows annually at the Venetian Theatre plus community outreach performances at senior centers and schools
The Outcome
Graduates have been accepted to summer programs at American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, and Alonzo King LINES Ballet. Several current students have placed in the top 12 at Youth America Grand Prix regional semifinals.
Best For
Students who thrive with individualized attention; families seeking strong community connection and moderate time commitment without sacrificing technical quality.
4. Dance Fusion Studio
The Program
Editor's note: We include Dance Fusion Studio with important caveats. While not a ballet-focused academy, it serves a specific niche in Hillsboro's dance ecosystem.
Dance Fusion Studio, opened in 2012, offers ballet classes within a broader recreational dance program. Ballet instruction comprises approximately 30% of class offerings, with jazz, hip-hop,
