I first heard Traxman at a basement party in Pilsen, 2014. The DJ dropped "Footworkin' On Em" and the floor cleared—not because people left, but because a circle formed instantly. Three dancers went at it, legs moving faster than I thought humanly possible. The track was built on a chopped gospel choir sample, kicked up to 160 BPM, layered with snares that hit like gunshots. I didn't know what I was witnessing. I just knew I couldn't look away.
Cornelius Ferguson—that's his real name—has been doing this since the early '90s. Before the internet cared about footwork, before RP Boo got his Pitchfork features, Traxman was already in the trenches. He'd sample anything: 70s soul records, TV dialogue, his grandmother humming in the kitchen. Then he'd twist it into something unrecognizable, something that only made sense when your body started moving.
South Side Alchemy
Chicago's dance music doesn't get the respect it deserves. House music, sure—people acknowledge that. Frankie Knuckles, the Warehouse, all the canonical stuff. But juke and footwork? Most electronic music fans couldn't tell you the difference. That's a problem, because footwork isn't just a subgenre. It's an entire physical vocabulary.
The style emerged from Chicago's Black neighborhoods in the late '80s. Dancers at house parties needed something faster, more aggressive. DJs responded by speeding up tracks, stripping them down, making room for the footwork battle. Traxman absorbed all of this as a teenager, and by the time he started producing, he understood something most outsiders miss: the music and the dance aren't separate things. You can't make footwork tracks without thinking about how the body moves through them.
His early productions on Databank Records were rough—deliberately so. The kicks were distorted, the samples barely cleaned up. That rawness wasn't a limitation. It was the point. Footwork was born in cramped living rooms and park district gyms. Slickness would've killed it.
The Sample Bible
Here's what sets Traxman apart from his peers: his sample library is absurd. The man digs deeper than most crate-diggers even bother. He'll pull a bar from a 1974 Donny Hathaway deep cut, pitch it up, chop it into syllables, and rearrange it until it sounds like a plea from another dimension. Gospel choirs get turned into rhythmic mantras. Funk basslines become percussive stutters.
Not every experiment works, honestly. Some of his tracks feel like sketches—unfinished ideas that never quite land. But when he locks in, the results are staggering. "Just A Feeling" is four minutes of pure emotional weight, built on a vocal sample that repeats until it stops being words and becomes pure sound. That's the trick. He doesn't just loop samples. He deconstructs them until meaning dissolves, then rebuilds meaning from the wreckage.
Going Global (Messily)
The international attention came late, and it came weird. UK producers like Addison Tek and Machinedrum started incorporating footwork elements around 2011-2012. Suddenly festivals wanted Chicago DJs. Some artists handled the transition well. Others got swallowed by the European festival circuit, playing 45-minute sets to crowds who treated footwork like a curiosity.
Traxman stayed in Chicago. That mattered. He kept playing local parties, kept collaborating with dancers, kept the feedback loop tight between the music and the movement. When he did tour, he brought dancers with him. That's not marketing. That's integrity. You can't separate footwork from its physical context and expect it to make sense.
Why This Still Matters
I won't pretend every Traxman release is a masterpiece. Some of his later work feels scattered, as if the sheer volume of output dilutes the impact. That's a fair criticism. But the core argument of his career—that Chicago's dance culture deserves global recognition on its own terms, not filtered through Western European electronic music standards—that argument won. He won it by showing up, decade after decade, making music that demanded physical engagement.
Start with "Da Mind of Traxman" if you're new. Then find a video of a footwork battle. Watch what happens when his beats hit and bodies respond. That's the connection. That's what records alone can't capture.
Traxman didn't just represent Chicago dance music. He became its argument for why regional sounds matter, why local scenes deserve preservation, why a basement party in Pilsen can contain more artistic truth than a Main Stage at Tomorrowland. The man's still producing. Still digging. Still proving that 160 BPM gospel from the South Side can move the whole damn world.
