Tango in La Paloma Ranchettes doesn't arrive by accident. The desert evenings, wide-open skies, and proximity to Tucson's growing arts scene have made this unincorporated Pima County community an unlikely hub for Argentine tango. Since the mid-2010s, a handful of dedicated studios have opened their doors between the creosote and ranch-style homes, offering everything from first-step fundamentals to competition-level training.

La Paloma Tango Academy

The oldest continuously operating tango studio in the area, La Paloma Tango Academy has occupied a converted 1940s ranch hall since 2016. The 3,200-square-foot main room features a sprung oak floor, original vigas, and north-facing windows that frame the Tucson Mountains during evening classes.
Who Teaches Here
The academy is co-directed by María Elena Voss and James Okonkwo. Voss trained for six years in Buenos Aires with Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne before relocating to Arizona; she leads the advanced program and specializes in salon-style tango and vals. Okonkwo, a former modern dancer, handles the beginner and intermediate tracks and is known for his work on axis and balance. Both instructors teach group classes and accept private students.

A newer, smaller operation founded in 2021, the Ranchettes Tango Collective occupies a modest industrial space near the Camino de Oeste and Paloma Parkway intersection. It distinguishes itself through an emphasis on tango nuevo and stage tango, along with a more flexible, drop-in-friendly schedule.
Who Teaches Here
Director Sofía Martínez trained in Córdoba, Argentina, and performed with the company Tango X before settling in Arizona. She teaches all levels, assisted by Daniel Reeves, a local musician and dancer who leads the collective's monthly musicality workshops.
