In a town better known for the Klondike Gold Rush and the Sourtoe Cocktail, a small but dedicated jazz dance community has taken root. Dawson City's three dance studios each offer a distinct flavor of jazz—whether you're after Broadway precision, nightclub funk, or improvisation in a century-old rec hall.
Unlike larger cities where competitive studios dominate, Dawson's jazz scene is shaped by seasonal rhythms, tourism economies, and multi-generational locals who keep classes running through long winters. Most studios operate on a September-to-April schedule, with reduced summer offerings when instructors and students scatter to festivals or seasonal work. If you're new to town or new to jazz, here's how to find your fit.
What to Know Before You Step Into Class
Jazz dance in Dawson City falls into three broad categories: classical/Broadway jazz (emphasizing technique, turns, and choreography), contemporary or jazz funk (fusing hip-hop, street styles, and Top 40 music), and improvisational or social jazz (prioritizing freedom of movement and community over polished performance).
Studios here typically run registered sessions (8–12 weeks) rather than unlimited drop-in models, though most offer single trial classes for $15–$20. You'll want to arrive 15 minutes early with jazz shoes, clean indoor sneakers, or bare feet depending on the studio's floor policy. Street shoes are universally prohibited.
Rhythmic Souls Dance Studio
123 Dance Lane, Dawson City, YT
Phone: (867) 555-0142 | Website: rhythmicsolesdawson.ca | Instagram: @rhythmicsouls.yt
Rhythmic Souls is the closest thing Dawson has to a pre-professional track. Founder Maria Chen, who trained at Toronto's George Brown College and spent six years in Montreal's commercial dance scene, returned to the Yukon in 2019 and built the studio around Broadway jazz fundamentals.
Her advanced jazz troupe, led by instructor James Okonkwo (a former backup dancer with Cirque du Soleil's Mystère), meets twice weekly and emphasizes isolations, pirouettes, and traveling combinations set to show tunes and big-band standards. The troupe performs at the Dawson City Music Festival and the Keno City Pie Social each summer.
Beginners aren't left out. Chen's Level 1 Broadway Jazz class breaks down basic jazz walks, chassés, and simple choreography in a low-pressure environment. "We structure our beginner classes around the idea that everyone should leave with one combination they can show their friends," Chen says.
Best for: Dancers seeking technical rigor, performance opportunities, or a structured progression.
Groove Nation
456 Beat Street, Dawson City, YT
Phone: (867) 555-0287 | Website: groovenationdawson.com | Instagram: @groovenation.yt
If Rhythmic Souls is the theater kid, Groove Nation is the DJ. Housed in a converted warehouse near the Yukon River waterfront, the studio specializes in jazz funk and commercial contemporary—styles that blend hip-hop grooves with jazz precision and Top 40 remixes.
Head instructor Tasha Benoit, who grew up in Whitehorse and built a following through TikTok choreography tutorials, teaches the studio's signature "Jazz Funk Fridays" class. The playlist leans heavily on remixes by Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, and Yukon-based electronic producers. Expect high-energy warmups, across-the-floor progressions with hair flips and body rolls, and a full routine built over four-week cycles.
Groove Nation also offers the only open-level drop-in jazz class in Dawson, running Wednesday evenings from January through March. No registration required.
Best for: Dancers who want a cardio-heavy workout, cross-training in hip-hop, or the flexibility of drop-in attendance.
The Jazz Movement
789 Swing Avenue, Dawson City, YT
Phone: (867) 555-0391 | Website: thejazzmovement.ca | Instagram: @thejazzmovement.dc
The Jazz Movement operates out of a 1912 Anglican parish hall on Swing Avenue, complete with original hardwood floors and windows that rattle when the wind hits. The space sets the tone: this is jazz as community practice, not commercial performance.
Co-directors Eleanor Vance and David Åsheim teach a rotating schedule that spans classic jazz (drawing from Jack Cole and Luigi techniques), contact improvisation, and live-music jazz sessions where local musicians accompany class. Their "Jazz for All Ages" Saturday morning session regularly includes teenagers, retirees, and tourism
